Police: Girl, 6, Thrown From Car Driven by Drunk Aunt

A 6-year-old suffered serious internal injuries when she was thrown from a car driven by her aunt, who is now accused of driving while intoxicated, Suffolk County police said Saturday.

A 25-year-old Deer Park woman was driving her niece and her 8-year-old daughter on Brookdale Avenue in Bay Shore when she apparently lost control of the car and hit a pole and two parked vehicles at around 4:30 p.m. on Christmas, police said. The car overturned and the younger girl was thrown out.

The driver and her daughter went to the hospital with injuries that weren't believed to be life threatening. The 6-year-old was hurt more seriously.

The driver was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child. It wasn't immediately clear if she had a lawyer who could speak on her behalf.
