Man on Scooter Dies in Police Custody in Queens: NYPD

The NYPD says a suspect with an active arrest warrant died in police custody after having difficulty breathing.

They say the 46-year-old suspect was sitting on a motorized scooter in Queens Wednesday when he sped off after spotting police.

Officers followed him in an unmarked car until he hit a side-view mirror of a parked vehicle.

Police say he fell off the scooter, got up and began running. Officers caught up with him.

While in custody, he informed officers he had breathing problems and needed his medication, which police gave to him.

Police say he lost consciousness when he got up. Officers removed his handcuffs, began administrating chest compressions and called EMS.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The medical examiner will determine how he died.
