Man Holds Children Hostage in New Jersey; Mom, Child Killed: Police

An armed man who took hostages Friday afternoon remains barricaded in a home in New Jersey on Saturday as authorities work to negotiate his surrender and his captives' release.

The man, whose identity has not been released, remained holed up in a brick house in South Trenton more than 32 hours after the standoff began. Police sources told NBC10 Philadelphia that a mother and child were dead inside the home and at least two children were being held hostage.

The armed gunman is the father of those children, the sources tell NBC10.

Police were called to the home before 3 p.m. Friday on reports of a barricaded suspect.

Authorities said police entered the home and found the man brandishing a gun. Police retreated safely and a perimeter was established around the home. A SWAT team was called in, and armored vehicles appeared at the scene. Police continued to negotiate with the suspect Saturday morning.

Homes on the surrounding block have been evacuated as a precaution. Both police and FBI negotiators remain at the scene.
