A knife-wielding man was shot and wounded inside a Flushing police station after stabbing someone on the street, according to authorities.
The mayhem began around 11 a.m. when a 48-year-old man was stabbed in the back outside the the 109th precinct on Union Street. The victim was waiting to get an accident report when 35-year-old Armando Torres attacked him with an 11-inch kitchen knife, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said.
When the suspect ran into the police station, officers told him to drop the knife. Torres lunged at an officer in the lobby, prompting three officers to shoot him in the chest and arm, Browne said.
"A mentally disturbed man who was off his medication entered the 109th precinct station enraged for some reason, looking to stab people," elected district leader Martha Flores-Vazquez said.
It's not known yet how many shots were fired. Torres is now listed in critical condition and the unidentified stabbing victim is in stable condition at Queens Hospital Center, authorities said.
No police officers were injured during the incident.
An investigation into the incident has closed the 109th Precinct and shut down parts of Union Street, which is used by several bus lines that run along Northern Blvd. The bus lines delayed by the street closing are the Q13, 14, 15, 16, 20(A/B), 28 and 44 lines.
