Woman Struck, Killed by MTA Bus in Brooklyn: NYPD

A woman was struck and killed by an MTA bus in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn Monday evening, police say, the latest in a recent series of fatal accidents in which pedestrians have been struck by MTA buses making left turns in the city.

The 62-year-old woman was crossing East 17th Street from the east side to the west side when MTA Bus B36 made a left turn from Avenue Z and hit her at about 6 p.m., police said.

The victim, identified as 62-year-old Eleonora Shulkina, of Brooklyn, was taken to Coney Island Hospital in critical condition, and pronounced dead there, police said.

The bus driver stayed at the scene. Police were investigating.

A series of recent fatal MTA bus accidents involving drivers making left turns has renewed discussion over how to mitigate blind spots for drivers. Last month, a 59-year-old woman was struck and killed by a Q23 bus while trying to cross Kessel Street near 71st Avenue in Forest Hills, Queens, and a 70-year-old woman was struck and killed by a B15 bus in East New York, Brooklyn.

A third woman was struck and killed by an MTA bus in Midwood last month, but the bus was not making a turn at the time. The 41-year-old Ruhksana Khan was crossing Ocean Avenue just steps from her home to pick up her 9-year-old son when she was hit by the BM1 bus on Nov. 25.
