    What to Know

    • The pedestrian was killed, and a state trooper sustained minor injuries. The driver suffered non-life threatening injuries

    • The pedestrian's car was parked not far from where he was hit, police said

A man who had gotten out of his car on the Meadowbrook State Parkway was struck and killed by an SUV while police were investigating a separate crash, authorities said.

New York State Police and Nassau County police were responding to a one-car crash on the northbound lanes of the parkway just before noon on Thursday when a driver traveling north in a Subaru Outback struck and killed Michael Patterson, 39, of Freeport, state police said.

Patterson's car was parked on the parkway not far from where he was hit, police said. It wasn't immediately clear why he had gotten out of his car.

The 31-year-old driver also hit two police cars, and a state trooper sustained minor injuries, according to police.

The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Police are looking into whether heavy rain may have played a role in the two incidents.

    The crash is under investigation.
