Patrol Car Hits, Injures 2 Children

Two Long Island boys were hurt after a vehicle slammed into a police cruiser and caused it to jump a curb and hit the children, police say.

The boys, John Flores, 8, and his cousin, Gerardo Melendez, 12, were waiting to cross the street at Deer Park and Near Lake avenues in Deer Park when they were hit by the cruiser, Suffolk County police said. Jose Flores, John's father, was taking them to a nearby pizzeria,

The boys, both of Hicksville, were taken to area hospitals and both were listed in stable condition, police said. Jose Flores wasn't injured.

The officer in the cruiser had a concussion, police said. The driver of the Toyota  Camry that struck the patrol car wasn't injured.

The patrol car came to a stop after hitting a light pole.

The crash is under investigation.
