Commuters on NJ Transit took to social media Monday evening after witnessing something pretty shocking on their rides home.
Around 5:45 p.m., one rider tweeted out after a train they were on opened doors on the wrong side of the train at Secaucus — causing another person to fall out, right onto the tracks.
Another passenger replied about 20 minutes later, confirming what the other rider said and added that the doors quickly closed after the man fell. That commuter says others started yelling to pull the emergency brake, and she ran through three train cars to find a conductor — who was completely unaware of what had happened.
It was not immediately clear who pulled the man to safety. A spokeswoman for NJ Transit said he suffered minor injuries but refused medical treatment. The transit agency says “human error” led to the door being opened.
This is not the first time this type of mishap has happened — not even the first time Monday. Just hours earlier, another commuter on NJ Transit snapped a picture of train doors open while at Penn Station, but the door led to the tracks, not the platform. Thankfully no one was reported to have fallen through those open doors.
And on separate occasions in 2017 and 2018, riders recorded several incidents of doors flying open while NJ Transit trains were moving. The agency blamed those occurrences on mechanical malfunctions.
