Parents Indicted After 2-Year-Old Drowns in Pool: Prosecutors

A mother and father were indicted Friday in the death of their 2-year-old daughter who drowned in a neighborhood pool last summer, New Jersey prosecutors announced.

Robert S. Trella, 41, and Brigitte M. McCarthy, of Berkeley Township, were indicted on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance.

Berkeley Township police found the 2-year-old child unresponsive in a neighborhood pool after receiving a 911 call about a 9-year-old wondering the neighborhood, looking for her sister.

Police determined Trella and McCarthy are the parents of the two children, and would leave the younger girl in the care of her older sisterd. Neighbors had also seen the toddler wandering the neighborhood unsupervised in the past, police said.

When their house was searched after the toddler was found dead, police allegedly discovered marijuana and heroin.

Attorney information from the couple was not immediately available.
