NJ Parents Sentenced in Beating Death of Toddler Girl: DA

A couple convicted in the beating death of their young daughter have both received lengthy state prison terms.

Jorge Orozco, 33, was given a 37-year term on Friday, while Raquel Ramirez received a 16-year sentence, Union County prosecutors said. The Elizabeth residents were convicted in March on manslaughter and child endangerment charges, but cleared of murder counts after a nearly monthlong trial.

Their 2-year-old daughter, Dayanna Orozco, was dead when first responders arrived at Orozco's apartment in Elizabeth in February 2014.

Investigators said she suffered broken bones and severe internal injuries. Authorities say she died from a brain hemorrhage.

Orozco and Ramirez said the girl was hurt after falling because of her difficulty walking.

Their attorneys argued during the trial that police couldn't say which parent caused the injuries.
