Officer Shoots, Kills Burglary Suspect After Being Hit By Car: Prosecutor

A New Jersey police officer shot and killed an attempted burglary suspect who hit him with a car during a getaway attempt Wednesday morning, prosecutors say.

The officer shot the driver after being hit by the suspect's car on New Jersey state Route 4 in Paramus near the River Edge border at about 5 a.m., according to Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli.

Molinelli said the driver then crashed the car into the median and got out, but was captured a short time later. The driver was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Three other suspects in the car were taken into custody. It is not clear if they were injured.

The extent of the officer's injuries were unknown.

Police say the four suspects were allegedly involved in a burglary attempt at a furniture store nearby before the shooting.

Route 4's westbound lanes reopened shortly before 10 a.m.
