Paramus Officer ‘Fully Conscious' After Being Shot Twice

A Paramus police officer who was shot while on duty late Sunday night is now "fully conscious, alert and able to communicate with us by writing," Paramus Acting Police Chief Christopher Brock announced Thursday.

Officer Rachel Morgan, 31, remains hospitalized but her "warrior" spirit was evident when she asked her superior officers in writing "Tell me I'm coming back to work," Brock said today in a statement.

The statement said colleagues are confident she will recover.  Her progress comes a day after the man accused of shooting her, 23-year-old Michael Carmody, died at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, NJ from self-inflicted gun shot wounds, officials said.

Carmody had been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of Officer Morgan, a four year police veteran. She was shot twice in the side, through a gap in her bullet proof vest, according to Paramus Mayor Richard LaBarbiera.

"From when she first arrived at the hospital it's been nothing but encouraging news," Mayor LaBarbiera told NBC New York, adding "She's been conscious."

As for Acting Chief Brock, he ended his statement by announcing in bold letters "TODAY IS A GREAT DAY!"
