Long Island Paramedic Dies on Job

A volunteer paramedic on Long Island died on the job while responding to a call Monday morning, officials say.

Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance Corps member Ralph Oswald, 64, was on a call for an unresponsive patient at about 9 a.m. when he went into cardiac arrest, the ambulance corps said.

Oswald had been providing emergency medical assessment on the patient when he told his crew he was experiencing distress, officials said. That's when he collapsed.

His colleagues tried to resuscitate him, along with Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance Corps, who also responded, according to the Hampton Bays ambulance corps. Oswald was taken to Southampton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
