Bronx Papa John's Franchise Owner Accused of Wage Theft

The state attorney general says the owner of nine Papa John's pizza franchises in the Bronx has been taken into custody in connection with the alleged theft of wages from his employees.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office says Abdul Jamil Khokhar turned himself in to authorities on Wednesday morning.

Criminal charges were expected to be filed later Wednesday. Schneiderman's office said they would include failure to pay wages and falsifying business records.

It is the first criminal case by Schneiderman's office against a fast-food franchise owner over alleged wage theft.

Officials say Khokar didn't pay minimum wage to some employees and also tried to avoid paying overtime.

A call and email to Khokar's attorney seeking comment were not immediately returned.
