The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has begun weekend ferry service that it hopes will make it easier for travelers who normally take PATH trains into and out of Manhattan.
PATH service between Jersey City's Exchange Place and World Trade Center stations is closed most weekends throughout 2014 while the agency makes repairs and upgrades the rail lines to install a new safety system.
Weekend ferries operated by New York Waterway are sailing between Paulus Hook Terminal and the World Financial Center Terminal starting Saturday and will end on the weekend of May 4. Boats will operate between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.
The fare will be $2.50 one-way, or $5 roundtrip.
Officials will evaluate ridership levels to determine whether the pilot program should be extended.
