Police say an 85-year-old was found dead and his wife lying unconscious inside a gas-filled apartment in upstate New York.
The man and his 84-year-old wife were discovered on Monday in their apartment at the Blue Hill Commons in Orangeburg.
Police say a burner on the kitchen stove was on but not lit.
Police say the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to Nyack Hospital. Her condition wasn't immediately available.
A downstairs neighbor told the Journal News it was lucky the couple's daughter found them because the natural gas could have filled the entire building. She said the woman was sickly and was cared for by her husband.
Police are trying to determine whether the stove was left on accidentally or intentionally.
