On the Racked: Chase In At East Village Funeral Home

And now the latest from Racked, covering shopping and retail from the sidewalks up.

1) East Village: Your chain store news of the day, to get things rolling: a Duane Reade is going right next to the Chase branch that replaced the 2nd Avenue Deli. Appropriately, it replaces a funeral parlor.

2) East Village: Above, some happy news for fans of the city's mom-and-pop stores. Seems the Essex Card Shop, after several decades on Avenue A between 2nd and 3rd Streets, will soon be expanding into the long-shuttered Coffee Pot café spot next door in a rare example of an old mom-and-pop getting bigger, instead of completely vanishing. Click through for a chat with the owners.

3) Morningside Heights/Harlem: The retail world taketh: from the Columbia area, the end of another Kim's Video outpost. Giveth: to 112th and Frederick Douglas... a new HSBC! Okay, crappy trade.
