Officers Shoot, Kill Suspect Armed With Gun in Newark: Police

Police in New Jersey are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a suspect who was armed with a gun dead, authorities say.

The shooting happened just after 9 p.m. Tuesday in Newark, according to the Newark Police Department.

Detectives said they were investigating "shootings and robberies" in the area of South Orange Avenue and South 20th Street when they walked up to a suspect's vehicle. As they approached the car, they saw one of the passengers armed with a gun, police said.

One of the officers fired his weapon, hitting the armed man, and killing him authorities said.

A firearm was also recovered at the scene, officials said.

Video from the scene shows a heavy police presence near the car. 

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is leading the investigation.
