Veteran Newark Officer in Serious Condition After Hit-and-Run

A Newark police officer was hospitalized Sunday in serious condition after being hit by a car while attempting to ticket the driver, authorities said.

The officer, a 14-year veteran, was issuing a traffic summons to the driver at the intersection of Foundry and Roanoke Streets around 3:30 a.m., according to Essex County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly.

After hitting the officer, the driver sped away.

The officer was taken to University Hospital in serious condition but he is expected to survive, according to Fennelly. His name wasn't disclosed for security reasons, he said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
