Man Charged in Beating of Off-Duty Cop Outside Bar

A 29-year-old man has been charged connection with an assault on an off-duty police sergeant in Queens after an apparent bar fight early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Police said Hayden Holder attacked Mohammed Deen when the 40-year-old sergeant and his wife walked out of St. John's Express, a bar near the intersection of Lefferts Boulevard and Liberty Avenue in Ozone Park, at about 4:45 a.m.

The sergeant was taken to a nearby hospital with severe head wounds. He was listed in critical but stable condition.

Prosecutors say Holder followed Deen to his car outside the bar, punched him from behind and then slammed his head on the ground.

Holder's attorney said his client was outside the bar with friends when some sort of dispute broke out over a drunken comment.

Holder was arraigned Monday on charges of attempted murder and felony assault.
