Long Island Town Sees 2nd Water Main Break in a Week

A Long Island town is cleaning up after its second water main in about a week.

American Water says an eight-inch cast iron main broke at Lawrence and Virginia avenues in Oceanside, flooding streets in the neighborhood.

The water main break is contained, and crews are now working to clear water from the road.

Fifteen homes are without water, but they haven't been evacuated or damaged, the utility says. Bottled water is being offered to families without working water in the meantime.

It's not clear what caused the main, which is about 60 years old, to break. It does not pose any health risks to residents, American Water says.

Last Monday, a water main break in a different section of Oceanside forced evacuations as water rushed the street. One homeowner had to be rescued in a raft, and her family's home was damaged.
