Obstetrician at NYC Hospital Diverted Insurance Checks to Personal Bank Account: DA

58-year-old Dr. Lawrence Levitan, of Lawrence, N.Y., stole $267,000 from Beth Israel Medical Center by pocketing his patients' insurance checks, prosecutors said

An obstetrician has been charged with defrauding a New York City hospital by diverting patients' insurance checks to his personal bank account.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. announced the indictment of Dr. Lawrence Levitan on Wednesday.

Vance said the 58-year-old Levitan, of Lawrence, N.Y., stole $267,000 from Beth Israel Medical Center by pocketing his patients' insurance checks.

Prosecutors say that under his agreement with Beth Israel, Levitan and the hospital were supposed to split insurance payments totaling more than $530,000.

They say Levitan kept it all instead.

Additionally, prosecutors say that Levitan's taxable income for 2010 and 2011 was underreported because of the fraud.

Levitan was indicted on charges including grand larceny, criminal tax fraud and falsifying business records.

His attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
