Not Armageddon: Just an Underground Subway Drill Gone Off Course

New York City pedestrians have to check for passing cars before crossing the street. They also need to beware runaway drills.

A tunnel-boring machine being used for an underground subway line slipped off course early Thursday morning and pierced a 2-inch hole through a city street.

The machine was testing the rock underneath Second Avenue near 90th Street, where a new, yet long-delayed, subway line is being constructed.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Aaron Donovan said there were no injuries and the hole was patched up before rush hour.

An employee at a Papa John's pizzeria that the machine broke ground in front of said the hole was gone before the restaurant opened Thursday.

Donovan said drilling is on hold until the MTA can figure out what caused the problem. The subway line is planned to be completed by 2016.
