Off-Duty Sheriff's Officer Wounded in Newark Shootout

An off-duty county sheriff's department officer was wounded in a shootout with two other men outside a nightclub in Newark early Thursday, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors say the 25-year-old Essex County sheriff's department officer was involved in an altercation inside the Mercedes & Mink lounge near Springfield Avenue and South 13th Street shortly after midnight. At some point, he went outside and was confronted by two men.

Prosecutors say one of the men pulled out a gun and fired at the officer, wounding him. The officer managed to return fire and the two suspects were shot.

Authorities said all three men were taken to the hospital in stable condition and are expected to be OK.

After investigation, police arrested 30-year-old Rasul Burt on attempted murder, assault and weapons charges. He was jailed on $250,000 bail. Attorney information was not immediately available.

Investigation is ongoing.
