Newark School Bus Hit by Fire; Nobody Hurt

A Newark school official said a school bus was hit by gunfire Tuesday as it stopped to drop off students from a city elementary school. No one on the bus was injured.

Newark schools spokeswoman Valerie Merritt told The Star-Ledger of Newark that the small, yellow bus was carrying three students from the Dayton Street Elementary School when shots were fired at about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday.

She said a student who was about to leave the bus got back on, and the driver drove to a location where he could call police.

Merritt said the students’ parents were called and they were taken home.

It was not immediately known how many shots struck the bus or who fired them.
