Newark Police, on Foot, Shoot Man Trying to Run Them Down With Car: Authorities

Police in Newark, N.J. shot a man they say was trying to run them down with a stolen car Friday morning outside a Marriott hotel near the airport.

Authorities say two officers and a lieutenant were on patrol just before 7 a.m. when they noticed a stolen Land Rover.

They followed the SUV to the rear of the Marriott at 600 Routes 1 and 9 South. Two men inside then jumped into another stolen car there.

Police and prosecutors say that when the officers began to approach the vehicle on foot, the driver tried to run them down.

One officer fired two shots, striking one suspect in the head. The suspects left the scene and the vehicle was found nearby.

The injured suspect was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition, authorities said. Two other suspects fled.
