Authorities in Newark are investigating a fatal shooting that followed a few days of respite from a recent crime wave.

Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio says 29-year-old Emmanuel Williams was shot and killed Wednesday evening.

The Essex County Prosecutor's office says Williams was shot multiple times in Newark's Central Ward.

Authorities say Williams made it some distance before collapsing. He was pronounced dead around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at University Hospital.

Police have not made any arrests and have yet to identify any suspects.

The killing comes after a few days of quiet following a streak in which Newark saw 10 killings in 10 days.
