Workers Strike for Better Wages at Tri-State Airports

Baggage handlers and other service workers are on strike at the tri-state’s three major airports.

The workers at LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty airports teamed up with the Service Employees International Union to protest what they call unfair working conditions. They are seeking $15 hourly wages.

Similar strikes are being organized by the same union at airports in Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It's not the first time workers at the tri-state's airports have staged strikes for higher wages.

Despite the strikes, no flight delays were reported.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs all three airports, said it has taken efforts to help increase wages for contract employees. The workers on strike are not employed directly by the Port Authority.
