Newark Dad Charged in Baby Girl's Death

Police arrested a 24-year-old Newark man Tuesday for allegedly killing his two-year-old daughter.

Travis Hartsfield has been charged with murder in the death of his daughter Asiyah Hartsfield.

Hartsfield called 911 at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday seeking medical attention for the girl, according to acting Essex County prosecutor Carolyn Murphy.

Asiyah was rushed to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 2 a.m.

An autopsy revealed the girl died from blunt force trauma, and the investigation was turned over to the Newark Police and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Squad.

The prosecutor's office did not detail how the toddler received the deadly injury, saying the investigation was still in its early stages.

Hartsfield was arrested at his home late Tuesday. He is expected to be arraigned later this week, according to the prosecutor's office.

He was in custody and could not be reached, and did not appear to have a lawyer.
