Newark Council President Now Acting Mayor

Cory Booker resigned from the post as of midnight Wednesday

The city of Newark says council president Luis Quintana is now the city's acting mayor.

Cory Booker resigned from the post as of midnight Wednesday and was sworn in Thursday in Washington as New Jersey's newest U.S. senator.

Newark spokeswoman Brenda Jones says a previously approved city ordinance established that the council president would become acting mayor.

A vote formalizing Quintana's interim position was scheduled for Thursday but not enough members showed up to take action. A new vote has been scheduled for Monday.

The city's regularly scheduled mayoral election is in May.
