Water Main Bursts in Tribeca Near Holland Tunnel

A water main break flooded streets in Tribeca Friday morning, forcing subway service changes and affecting traffic from the Holland Tunnel.

A 12-inch main broke at Varick and Spring streets around 6 a.m, according to the city Department of Environmental Protection. The break briefly flooded parts of the intersection, but the water later subsided and has since been contained mainly to one side of Spring Street.

Crews shut off the water at about 7 a.m. and will excavate the street to fix the pipe, officials said.

Outbound traffic from the Holland Tunnel onto Spring Street has been cut down to two lanes at the intersection.

No. 1 train service resumed between South Ferry and 42nd Street after earlier suspensions, though subway riders were advised to expect lingering delays.
