$14.5 Billion in Lost Money Waiting to Be Returned to New Yorkers

People in New York who may have some money owed to them can claim them online.

State comptroller Thomas DiNapoli oversees unclaimed funds accounts valued at $14.5 billion, and wants to return the money to its rightful owners, he said Wednesday.

The billions come from old bank accounts, utility deposits, uncashed checks, insurance claims, stocks and other sources that have been dormant for years. Some accounts hold money that has been lost and forgotten since the 1940s.

New Yorkers can check if they have lost or unclaimed money here.
