Thursday Marks Hottest Day of Year in Central Park

Thursday marked the hottest day so far this year in Central Park as a wave of sizzling summery heat and humidity moving through the region sent the mercury to 90 degrees, Storm Team 4 says.

Temperatures in parts of New Jersey and New York climbed above that mark, but the suffocating humidity made it feel closer to 100 degrees than 90 degrees in spots.

Contrasting with Wednesday’s warm but pleasant conditions, rising humidity and poor air quality made Thursday sticky and hazy. Air quality alerts have been issued for New York City, the Hudson Valley, Fairfield County, Connecticut, and all of New Jersey.

Storm Team 4 says a few isolated thunderstorms could develop across the region Thursday evening. Any storm that does develop would likely be strong or severe, with gusty winds and hail.

Hot, hazy and humid conditions should stick around Friday and Saturday, along with a few more isolated thunderstorms, Storm Team 4 says. Highs both days could hit the upper 80s or 90s.

A cold front will move through late Saturday, making for more tenable temperatures that will continue into the next workweek.
