NY Giant Steve Weatherford Takes NJ Student to High School Prom

Prom night was twice as special for a New Jersey high school senior who not only attended the special event with her boyfriend, but with a New York Giant.

Bayonne High School student Lauren Delbert invited the Super Bowl XLVI championship-winning punter Steve Weatherford to her prom on Twitter with the message, "Will you tackle prom with me?"

She never expected he would respond.

"He's my favorite Giant so I sent it to him and he answered yes, and it all went down from there," she said.

The NFL star arrived in style Friday to pick her up and instead of a corsage, gave her an autographed football and a hug.

"Just looking back at how exciting prom was for me, I know how exciting this is," said Weatherford.

The married father of three pulled out all the stops, trading in his team bus for a convertible and his football uniform for a designer tuxedo.

"This is Hugo Boss, and Versace shoes -- a little different than what I wore 13 years ago to my prom," he joked.

Weatherford and Delbert had even texted each other photos ahead of time to make sure they were color coordinated.

But the football star wasn't Delbert's only arm candy as they arrived on the red carpet. Delbert's boyfriend, Steven Schumann, wearing a Giants Super Bowl ring, also escorted her to the dance.

"It's exciting," he said. "I am happy to meet Steve, and glad he's taken time out of his day to hang with us."

Students and faculty say it was a sweet gesture on the part of Weatherford.

"The students are excited," said principal Rich Baccarello. "He is a national figure, at least around here, and he gives to his fans."

And for one particular fan, it was a night she'll never forget.

"It was amazing," said Delbert.

Weatherford has another prom Saturday night in Atlantic City, part of his Project Prom initiative in which he pays for the prom expenses of 10 couples affected by Hurricane Sandy.
