Florida Couple Who Claimed Share of $1.6B Lottery Prize Is Originally From Long Island

The couple moved to the Sunshine State from New York in 1991

The couple who claimed a share of last month's record-breaking $1.6 billion Powerball ticket Wednesday is originally from Long Island.

David Kaltschmidt and Maureen Smith, who moved to Melbourne, Florida, in 1991, came forward to claim their share of the historic prize, saying that finding out they won was "still like a pinch."

Smith said she had bought the ticket at a local grocery store. When Kaltschmidt brought her the ticket the morning after winning numbers were drawn, she already knew they'd hit the jackpot.

"When he brought the ticket to me, I knew they were my numbers," she said. "I looked online to make sure they were correct, we couldn't believe it."

The couple says they are taking a single lump-sum payment of $327.8 million before taxes.

The other two winning tickets for the Jan. 13 drawing were bought in Mumford, Tennessee, and Chino Hills, California.

John and Lisa Robertson of Munford, Tennessee, cashed in their ticket last month, taking a lump sum total of about $327 million. Munford is about 25 miles north of Memphis.
