New York Democrats Urge Tighter Gun Controls, Background Checks

New York Senate Democrats are doubling down in their efforts to counter the Trump administration by proposing tighter state gun control laws.

The conference on Tuesday touted a package of bills aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of children, people who have committed hate crimes and those repeatedly threatening others in domestic violence situations.

Minority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said conference members will also work in the Republican-led Senate to protect laws like the SAFE Act that requires universal background checks and imposes a strict ban on assault weapons.

The bills are part of Democrats' "resistance agenda" that includes proposals to protect immigrants and compel President Donald Trump to release his tax returns.

Trump last month reaffirmed his support for expanded gun rights when speaking at the National Rifle Association convention.
