New Jersey's attorney general says a ruling boss in a New York crime family has been sentenced to five years in prison for his role in an international gambling operation that saw an estimated $2.2 billion in wagers.
Superior Court Judge Salem Vincent Ahto sentenced Matthew Madonna of Seldon, New York, to five years in state prison on Wednesday.
Acting Attorney General John Hoffman said Thursday Madonna was member of the three-man ruling panel of the Lucchese crime family. Madonna pleaded guilty in June to a second-degree racketeering charge.
Five others are facing sentencing who along with Madonna were charged and arrested in 2007.
Prosecutors say the operation took sports wagers using password-protected websites and a location in Costa Rica where bets were recorded.
Officials estimate $2.2 billion was transacted.
