    Gunshot Shatters School Bus Window

The NYPD has arrested a 27-year-old man, charging him with possession of a weapon, after a bullet whizzes through the window of an empty school bus. Police say the bus was not the target. Lori Bordonaro reports. (Published Monday, June 22, 2015)

Police say early morning gunfire struck a school bus in Washington Heights.

There were no children aboard when a bullet shattered a window on the bus.

The NYPD says the bus driver, Irvin Mendez, was not injured.

"I feel good, very good," Mendez said. "My God protect me."

Mendez had just started his route down Amsterdam Avenue around 6:30 a.m. Monday when someone fired three shots near 164th Street.

"I heard a shot, boom boom," Mendez said. "One bullet hit the bus."

Mendez said he was shaken and immediately called his wife.

"When he called me, I knew he was okay," his wife said. "First thing I asked was, 'How were the kids?'"

Chopper 4 footage from the scene shows police surrounding the vehicle.

Police say the shots were fired from an unknown direction and they're not sure who the intended target was.

But officers swarmed a building across the street a short time later and hauled away a man and two women in handcuffs.

One person was placed under arrest after shooting; it's not clear if the other two people will face charges.

Mendez, who has been driving school buses for 11 years, said the scare won't keep him from returning to work.

    "That's my job," he said.
