21 Children Taken to Hospital After Science Experiment Mishap

Twenty-one children were taken to the hospital as a precaution after a mishap during a science experiment at their Queens school, officials say.

Firefighters were called to Holy Child Jesus Catholic Academy on 86th Avenue in Richmond Hill after a classroom filled with smoke during the experiment Thursday morning, according to a representative with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, which runs the school.

The students and a teacher quickly cleared the room, and they were taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

It's not clear how old the students are.

The Diocese said it was science fair week at the school.

Initial FDNY reports that there had been a chemical spill in the lab proved unfounded.
