Queens Building Evacuated For High Carbon Monoxide After Manhole Fires: FDNY

Authorities say about two dozen residents in Queens were forced from their homes after high levels of carbon monoxide were detected in the area.

They say the fire department responded to smoke and fire coming from several manholes at 38th street and 31st Avenue in Astoria around 5:30 a.m. Friday.

There were no reports of injuries.

A fire department spokesman says nearby buildings were checked for carbon monoxide levels because of the smoke.

He says about 25 people in eight units of one building were told to temporarily leave their apartments.

Con Edison crews are at the scene.
