NYC Settles Over Public Housing Mold Complaints

The settlement will require the city to complete basic moisture repairs within a week on average

New York City's public housing authority has reached a settlement in a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of residents afflicted by asthma who complained of excessive mold in their apartments.

The Natural Resources Defense Council says the lawsuit and settlement were both filed in Manhattan federal court on Tuesday.

The settlement will require the city to complete basic moisture repairs within a week on average. Complex repairs, like a leaky roof, must be completed within about 15 days. If the city fails to comply with those guidelines 95 percent of the time, it will be held in violation of the agreement.

The housing authority says it has made great strides in reducing the number of mold complaints and repair issues during the past year.
