NYC Man Gets 18 Years for Fatal Beating of Baby

Prosecutors say a Bronx man has been sentenced to 18 years behind bars in the fatal beating of a 2-month-old baby.

District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced the sentence Friday for Luis Cartagena. He pleaded guilty to attempted murder on April 9.

Joemill Greer was beaten in October, 2014. The defendant — the child's step-uncle — was babysitting.

The baby's injuries included multiple skull fractures and bleeding in the brain.

Cartagena admitted in court that he struck Joemill several times in the head to stop him from crying.

Prosecutors say he did not call 911 as the baby lay mortally injured.
