NYC to Spend $10 Million in Crackdown of Illegal Hotels, Airbnb

New York City is planning to spenjd $10 million over the next three years to help crack down on illegal hotels in the city.

The funding will be given to the Mayor's Office of Special Enforcement which targets hotels that advertise on sites like Airbnb. Administration officials say illegal hotels drain the already scarce housing market of affordable units.

The Daily News says the funding will go to hire more staff, create a public awareness campaign about the hotel occupancy laws and new technology that uses data to find illegal operations.

The housing laws don't allow people to rent their apartments for less than a month. Some exceptions are made for single and two-family homes.
