New Database Keeps Track of Violations, Records at All NYC Buildings

One apartment listing website is hoping to put lousy landlords on notice.

Apartable, known for listing available no-fee apartments and other properties in New York City, launched a searchable database of every one of New York City's 900,000 buildings, listing violations and other information that renters might find important.

DNAInfo reported that Apartbale’s founder, Avishai Weiss, launched the site to help give potential tenants some additional power in the renting process.

"I'm just looking for ways to make the experience less painful for renters," Weiss told the news website. "Landlords have all the power in New York City."

DNAInfo reports that Apartable’s database aggregates public data from several city agencies, culling complaint reports, violations, building permits and tax histories back five years.

The site also allows tenants who currently live in apartments to write reviews on their buildings.

"It gives you a good idea of who your future landlord will be," Weiss said.
