Sen. Charles Schumer wants a federal law to prohibit trespassing on high-profile structures after incidents involving people who scaled the Brooklyn Bridge and World Trade Center.
The New York Democrat advocated the change Monday during an appearance with the NYPD's deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, John Miller.
The law also could apply to such structures as the Statue of Liberty and the suburban Indian Point nuclear power plant.
It would include a punishment of up to five years in prison.
A Russian tourist was arrested last summer after climbing the Brooklyn Bridge. Earlier in the summer, two artists claimed responsibility after American flags atop the bridge were replaced with white ones. In the spring, a teen climbed a World Trade Center tower.
