New York Archdiocese Auctioning Papal Fiat for Charity

The Archdiocese of New York is auctioning off one of two Fiat 500 Lounge hatchbacks Pope Francis used during his trip to New York City in September.

The New York Times reports the auction on CharityBuzz.com began March 17 when the car appeared in the St. Patrick's Day parade in New York. It ends Thursday afternoon.

Bidding had reached $250,000 by Wednesday evening, surpassing the $82,000 fetched by the papal Fiat used to carry Pope Francis around Philadelphia during his U.S. tour.

The proceeds will go to Catholic schools and charities. Cardinal Timothy Dolan will greet the winner and bless the car at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

The archdiocese hasn't decided what to do with the second Fiat the pope used while in New York City.
