Shark Spotted off Jersey Shore in Tri-State's 2nd Sighting in 1 Week

For the second time in less than a week, lifeguards called bathers out of the water after spotting sharks near tri-state beaches.

A lifeguard says he saw what appeared to be a shark fin off the shore of Margate, New Jersey, Monday morning. He said he called swimmers out of the water after seeing the fin -- which appeared to be chasing fish -- and other lifeguards went out to investigate.

It’s unclear if more signs of the aquatic predator were found.

The sighting comes less than a week after a shark was spotted 60 yards off the shore of Overlook Beach on Long Island.

The sighting prompted officials to close down three beaches for about an hour Wednesday. Those beaches were deemed safe, but some beachgoers told NBC 4 New York they were still on edge.

The sightings come in the wake of a rash of shark attacks off the coasts of the Carolinas. At least eight attacks have been reported along the popular beaches in the last several weeks.
