A New Jersey police officer was killed when he crashed his car while off-duty early Friday, authorities say.

Trooper Glenny Almonte was killed when his Honda Accord hit a curb and guardrail near a service area on the New Jersey Turnpike in Ridgefield, authorities say.

The man was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

"The loss of Trooper Glenny Almonte saddens the entire State Police family," said state police superintendent Colonel Rick Fuentes. "We are offering support to Trooper Almonte’s loved ones as well as to all of our employees touched by this tragedy."

The 28-year-old was a 2013 graduate of the state police academy and was assigned to the Totowa station.
