Dog Runs Out Onto Ice in NJ, Drowns During Rescue Attempt: Police

A dog police were trying to rescue from a bay along the New Jersey-New York border disappeared under the ice and drowned, authorities say.

Rescue squads were dispatched to the Raritan Bay near Aberdeen, New Jersey, Tuesday morning after a fisherman spotted an emaciated pit bull that had run out onto the ice.

Police say that by the time they arrived, the dog had gone back onto dry land. But when they tried to rescue the dog, it ran back out onto the ice.

A dive team in thermal underwater gear was moved out to try to get the dog, but it ran out onto open water, where it drowned.

The dog’s body hasn’t been recovered, police say.

It’s not clear if the dog was feral or if it had run away from its home. Police said it appeared that the animal had not eaten in several days.
