New Jersey Man Dies of West Nile Virus: Report

A 65-year-old New Jersey man has died of West Nile virus, the first fatality from the illness since 2013, according to the state health department.

The Bergen Record reports the Aug. 29 death is one seven cases of the mosquito-borne illness reported in New Jersey this year.

The person who died, who was unidentified, lived in Passaic County, according to the Record.

The virus tends to be spread by mosquitoes that bite birds carrying the disease and then bite humans or other mammals. Symptoms include sudden high fever, muscle pains, and a headache that worsens.
